Star Company

Rules for Membership

Member must be a student of Blackwood Studios, and regularly attend a minimum of three technique classes per week. A minimum of four technique classes are required for “Elite” membership.

Member must be willing to attend regular rehearsals and performances when necessary. Cost of travel, conventions, competitions and workshops is the responsibility of the parent/guardian of the student selected for membership.

Member must be on time for all scheduled rehearsals and performances as instructed. Member is required to stay through the end of the function unless prior arrangements have been made.

Member must pay a membership fee of $100.00. Member will receive free rehearsals and costumes will be provided at no extra charge for all Star Company functions. Members may choose to purchase a “Star Company” Jacket at the beginning of the term for an additional fee.

Members must notify Star Company director at least 1 week in advance of any missed rehearsal, and 2 weeks in advance of any missed performance. Non-notification will be considered grounds for dismissal.

Code of Conduct: As a Star Company member, and a direct representative of Blackwood Studios, you must maintain professionalism and decorum at all functions, including your dress and conduct in Blackwood Studios classes and rehearsals as well as outside functions. ANY breach of conduct will be grounds for immediate dismissal.

The choreographer and Star Company directors have sole discretion to withdraw a dancer from a routine if deemed necessary.

At the discretion of Star Company directors and choreographers, all members may not perform at every function due to changing variables including stage size, time limits, attendance at rehearsals, or other extenuating circumstances.

Dance captains may be appointed for each routine. They will be responsible for helping the directors rehearse the routines and answer specific questions for that routine.

The Membership Meeting (Please bring a parent, if possible): “PROVE IT DAY!!” All members who wish to be members of Star Company Companies “A” & “B” MUST prove it! For the first rehearsal, each member must bring one item to “demonstrate”. Members are asked to bring one item they use at least once a week and demonstrate how it works. Try to make it interesting so it will tell us something about you!

Each presentation should be about THREE minutes long. You must also include a short poem about yourself.

There will be a short test. Questions like—Who are the current members? Recite the Star Company code of conduct. What does “Star Company” mean? What language and why? Who chose the name “Star Company”? What was the first year of Star Company? Name five former Star Company members who have won FDM Scholarships.

Members will not be allowed to participate in Star Company functions until they have proven to the other members their commitment. (Consider this your first performance!) Don’t forget, dues will be collected, and schedules will be passed out on “Prove It!” day!

Congratulations! To those who have been selected as a
member of
this very special group!!
